Andre Maur: Bob, tell me that a squash roadie didn't just rob the tourney Bob: well...Maybe ....but not necessarily.... Andre: ....Bob....What happened? Bob: Well Andre, there was this dude from Chicago, he was a very friendly player, he didn't say 'no' when I asked him to play... Andre: ...and.... Bob: ...He robbed us.
Congratulations to Edward G. (4.5)
We had 9 players in last night's Squash SMASH Tourney - Great turn out considering the last few weeks have been pretty slow. Edward G. (4.5), in town for just a beat, came up to play some squash.... He taught a lot of Atlanta squash players how Chi-town does squash.... He went through a tough field too: Fletch C. (5.0) - fell, Chris E (3.5) (and also a Houston roadie) - fell, Luis P. (3.0) our strong local - fell twice! He said he'd be back in maybe January (I would too if I knew the flock was easily fleeced). Graciously, Edward did forgo the Marlow's Tavern Gift Card and donated it to the next tourney. Atlanta - Make ready your preparations and skills.
1. Edward G. (4.5) - $81 + $25 Marlow's Tavern Gift Card
2. Luis P. - $39
3. Todd H. (3.0) - $15
Saim K. (5.0) - Won the NIB ball for signing up online.
The final full bracket
All things considered - it was a battle for the night with lots of new players: Chris E. (3.5), out of Houston and who debuted in our Sept 14 tourney, came back for some more action. Luis P. (3.0) brought a friend, David R. (3.0) and even though David fell in the first round, he said he had a lot of fun. Speaking of Luis P., he gave everyone a run for the money with some great gets and long rally. This is Luis's 3rd time coming in 2nd... a gambler might put their money on him in the next tourney. We also had Wayne J. (4.5), who being a upper level skill player is used to giving up weight to all the lower level players... but not this tourney - Wayne got to face two 3.0 players but then also had a battle against Saim K. (5.0). Saim K., who usually doesn't sweat, had a bead of sweat on his brow that match. Did I mention Robert M. (4.0)? He's been gone for a long while and last played back in August. We reminded him what happens to players who don't play for a while. Even though he just left to go to Bangkok, hopefully, he'll be back in a week or two.
All in all it was a great night. I hope everyone had a great time.
Below are some great pics n vids and more terrible commentary.
I'll have next week's tourney announcement up in a day or two. Not to minimize the accomplishment but it was a slow night... only 5 people played. Normally 5 is too small to run a tournament but we went for it anyway hoping that one of the players that signed up online would be able to make it last minute to make a field of 6 (the min).
But that didn't stop Carl K. (2.5) from overpowering 4 other players to take home first place of $45! There were a lot of tough matches and they covered the skill levels, from 2.5 to 5.0. Carl got knocked down into the losers' bracket in the first round by Todd H. (3.0). Saim K. (5.0), a tournament favorite and holding the highest winnings, was surprised by the newcomer, Tucker M. (4.5) in some really hard matches. Rehan S. (4.0) cleared the winner's bracket and was waiting on Carl K. a few matches from them. Luckily, Tucker M. (4.5), wore out the other players but had to leave early and forfeited out. Now in the finals and worn down, Rehan S. looked to Carl to let him go home easily. Carl obliged and beat Rehan in 2 quick games. If you see Carl H., congratulate him on the win. 1. Carl H. (2.5) - $45 2. Rehan S. (4.0) - $20 3. Todd H. (3.0) - $10
* Due to the small field, consolation prizes or gift cards were not given out
Thanks again for everyone who played. Special thanks to our sponsors, Marlow's Tavern, Sushi Nami, and Under the Corktree. We also appreciate the crowd of spectators that watched the finals and added to the excitement.
Below are some more highlights, video, and pics. Thanks again to everyone coming out to play!
