Saturday January 6 at 11am will be the first Squash SMASH Tourney of 2018! This is a great time to workout your frustration of all the things that you didn't get over the holidays like: New squash balls, new squash bag, squash lessons, squash shoes, squash.... well... ok... maybe that's just me... But get out and play!
Short notice - But we're going to try to get a tourney scheduled this first weekend in December. Please hit the sign up link above to let me know you can make it. If you can't make it, check out the Fall/Winter SMASH Schedule
For those of you who don't know about Squash SMASH Tourney's.... This is a high pressure event with cash prizes for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and maybe 4th. Randomly selected players will also get a $25 Marlow's Tavern Gift Card, Free Blue Moon Pizza, $50 Sushi Nami Gift Card, or other cool stuff.
We CANCELED this event... Looks like everyone selected options B and C below. No worries though - Next event will be on Sat Dec 2. Got Squash Leftovers?
It's a tough call to have a tourney the Saturday just after Thanksgiving because people will be off work and:
a. Want to play squash - so the tourney will be giant! b. Traveling and having fun outside of Atlanta... maybe playing squash somewhere else? c. Have friends and family in town who are funner than playing squash (not likely)
So - If you think you will play, please sign up online so that I know to run the tourney or not. We need at least 6 players signed up by 10:30am on Saturday morning.
High pressure with cash prizes for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and maybe 4th. Randomly selected players will also get a $25Marlow's Tavern Gift Card, free Blue Moon Pizza, $50 Sushi Nami Gift Card, or other cool stuff.
Happy Thanksgiving! - See you on the courts!

...Squash is only for those who can stomach it...
We had 8 players in Saturday's Squash SMASH Tourney and Reemez A. (4.0) came out on top. He's a squash machine - not only did he play in the tourney, he also played in pickup matches on the side while waiting for his matches - and then - AND THEN... after winning the tourney, he still kept playing!
Rameez had some tough matches too. Like when he had to play first time player, Shane M. (5.0). Shane is brand new to the handicap and wasn't ready for how close it was going to be. The first game against Rameez went down to game ball for both players in a tight match. Then there was Mario de M. (4.5), one of our most seasoned SMASH players and #5 of all time WINNERS, who gave Rameez another tight match. It wasn't until Rameez ran up against Roger W. (3.5) that things got real.... and due to a bad handicap call that rated Roger as a 3.0 (No effnwai) by your the tourney director, aka that mediocre player, he got pushed into the Losers' bracket to face Mario again! The squash machine worked back through the Losers' bracket and faced off against Roger W. again - this time with the correct handicapping. Congratulations to Rameez A. (4.0)! 1. Rameez A. (4.0) - $96 2. Roger W. (3.5) - $44 3. Mario de M. (4.5) - $20 Mario de M. (4.5) - $25 Marlow's Tavern Gift Card Randy J. (3.5) - Blue Moon Pizza Gift Card
Final Brackets
If you missed it, you missed a lot of fun. The field was skilled between 2.5 and 5.0 and had two new players Shane M. (5.0) and Avi A. (2.5). Even though Avi got knocked out in the first rounds, he still got to play Mario de M. (4.5) and Shane M. (5.0) - players he would never have gotten to play in a standard tourney. Avi made it hard on them by taking at least one in each match letting the skilled players know that he was serious. Shane M. (5.0) hung in there a bit longer and made it to the second round against Rady J. (3.5). Randy has played is a few SMASH tourneys and knew how to keep the pressure on his higher skilled opponent and even pushed one of the games to game ball for both players.
Speaking of Randy, Randy started the tourney off by matching up against Bob W. (3.5), aka a mediocre player, and punished Bob for his squash mediocrity. Randy finally went home after getting pushed out by Mario de M. (4.5). Bob also got to play longtime sparing partner, Jeff D. (3.0).... but Jeff made sure Bob knew they were not sparing this time... All in all there was a lot of fun - too much to write - Next time get there! Check below for all the pics and vids and bonus commentary. The next SMASH Tourney will be held 11am Saturday Nov 25 at Lifetime Fitness. Rumor has it that Andre 'Legend' Maur will play! Registration is open! Online Squash SMASH Tourney Registration Form. You can see all upcoming SMASH events on the SMASH Tourney Schedule.

11am ~ 1:30pm THIS Saturday, Nov 11 Squash SMASH Tourney Lifetime Fitness - Sandy Springs
We weren't sure there was going to be enough payers to even have a Saturday morning SMASH tourney. At one point it was canceled at the last minute because we only had two players... then Assam walks in and ropes 3 guys that were ready to leave into playing a few more games! Those 3 players, plus Assam, plus the two that were already there pushed us over the minimum 6 players. GAME ON! 1. Paul D. (3.5) - $72 2. Muhammad J. (3.0) - $28 3. Mario de M. (4.5) - $20 Nadeem C. won the $25 Marlow's Tavern Gift Card
It all played out in about 1.5 hours and at the end of that, Paul D. (3.5) was standing alone. Paul has played in a few SMASH tourneys but this is his first time finishing in the money... and even better - winning! It wasn't all easy because he had to go up against some serious competition. His first match was with Nadeem C. (2.5), who is pretty new to squash but still can manage a racquet and not to be underestimated. Nadeem put up some great pressure but it wasn't enough to keep Paul down. Paul's next match was against a tiger! The tiger was named Assam J. (5.5.)! Paul has felt Assam's true competitive speed in other SMASH events so he knew this was going to be nerve racking. But Paul kept it together, waited for Assam to make an error or two, and then take the points when he could. Paul pulled that one out and pushed Assam into the losers' bracket. But what's worse than playing a tiger? How about the father of a tiger!? For realz! Paul had to play Assam's father, Muhammad J. (3.0) who knows a thing or two about squash... but Paul was able to keep the wheels on through some tough rallies and muscle through. Paul held on to the winner's bracket. Muhammad went down into the Loser's bracket and clawed his way back to the finals where.... he had to face Paul again in the finals. It was closer this time but in the end, Muhammad ran out of steam, and the outcome was the same. Congratulations to Paul D. (3.5)!
There were a lot of fun matches - Like when Kashif A. (3.5) went up against Muhammad J. (3.0) in the first round. Both players had never played in an EvenSquash Handicapped tourney before but have played each other frequently. They though this was going to be another fun game until they realized that... the handicap was going to make it very close. Assam J. (5.5) went up against Mario de M. (4.5) with some long rallies and tight matches where both players were on game ball points. Mario eventually knocked Assam out and advanced. Mario then played Kashif. Did I mention that Kashif had been working out since 7am? This was Kashif's last match, he knew he was spent, and he played it smart, forfeited instead of risking injury. Mario and Muhammad then battled it out to see who would face Paul in the finals. Mario took 3rd.
There was a lot more action - too much to write - Next time get there!
Check below for all the pics and vids and bonus commentary.

On Saturday, November 4, at 11am,Lifetime Fitness - Sugarloaf (Lawrenceville) location will host a SquashSMASH tourney. All players of all skill levels are welcome. This is just like the squash SMASH tourneys in Atlanta ... just in Sugarloaf... and not Atlanta....

Cash prizes - Payouts for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and maybe 4th ... and maybe some other loot too.
Handicapped, mixed skill level play - Completely random draw - Anyone can play anyone!

Matches are best 3 games - Fast and fun matches. Event should last about two hours.
She's a first time SMASH player and a first time winner. How'd she do it? Some might say beginners' luck others say she kept a cool head against some very intimidating players, calmly looked for opportunities to take, and patiently waited for them to make mistakes. Leslie went against some solid players like Nicholas G. (3.5), who I believe is 13 years old but owns a squash court like an seasoned athlete, but he was new to the SMASH format and the new kind of pressure that Leslie had in store for him. They played out three tight games before Leslie put him down into the losers' bracket. She then took on Fong Y. (4.5), who has played in many SMASH tourneys and is ranked #12 on the all time winners' charts, but even though he was able to pressure Leslie with hard serves, it cost him with the occasional mistake. Leslie beat Fong by waiting for opportunities and surprising Fong with unexpected winners. She then would face Rameez A. (4.0), who knows what he's doing on the court and is a solid player, but he didn't keep the ball far enough away from her and she was able to execute it. The Rameez vs Leslie scenario played out twice because she beat him the first match pushing him down into the losers' bracket only to beat him again with the same plays in the finals. Congratulations to Leslie B. (2.5) by taking the first place prize of $108 of everyone's cold hard money!
1. Leslie B. (2.5) - $108 2. Rameez A. (4.0) - $52 3. Alejandro C. - $20 Rameez A. (4.0) - $25 Marlow's Tavern Gift Card Assam J. (5.5) - Blue Moon Free Pizza
Final Tourney Bracket - Click to enlarge
TOPGUN SMASH lived up to the hype with 9 great players and an aircraft carrier load of fun. There were some great matches like when Assam J. (5.5) went against Fong Y. (4.5) where Fong had to use all the skills he had to hold back Assam's onslaught. Jeff D. (3.0), a regular to the SMASH tourneys, came in hot and with a purpose, was able to get three solid matches in before being pushed out by Alejandro C. (3.5). Speaking of Alejo, who was #14 on the all time winner's list, just pushed up the list to #9 by taking 3rd place with some very exhausting matches like the ones against Fong and Rameez. Fong Y. (4.5) also had a good run and got to play the full spectrum of players, Leslie B. (2.5), Alejandro C. (3.5), and Assam J. (5.5.).
Paul D. (3.5), who's always a fun player and was here looking for even more fun. Paul didn't know that his first match was going to be against a tiger and he got all the fun he could handle by matching up Assam J. (5.5)'s full power and competitiveness. It was close and even came down to the last point for each player to decide the match. Assam advanced and Paul was pushed down into the loser's bracket to play even match against Alejandro.
Then there's Nicholas G. (3.5), who I thought was going to snap this tourney off because he is such a force in traditional squash tournaments, but he got pushed out early on but did stick around to watch the action and play a few pickups. I'm betting he'll be back and my money will be on him. Johannes D. (2.5) who hasn't played in a while got a refresher on why he loves to play squash. Even though it was a tough Saturday morning, he picked up some great experience. All in all - it was a great Saturday morning with lots of squash! Thanks again to Marlow's Tavern, Blue Moon Pizza, and Sushi Nami for sponsoring the tourney and special thanks to all the players! Hope everyone had fun! Check below for all the pics and vids and even more terrible commentary. The next SMASH Tourney will be held 11am Saturday Nov 4 at Lifetime Fitness - Sugarloaf. Registration is open! Leslie B. (2.5) vs Rameez A. (4.0)
Finals: Leslie shows Rameez the 'Now you go home' shot
Alejandro C. (3.5) vs. Fong Y. (4.5) (Green shirt)
Alejo and Fong play each other frequently... but this time, no one is playing
Nicholas G. (3.5) vs. Leslie B. (2.5)
Nicholas with some quick points... but.... Leslie is waiting...
Rameez A. (4.0) (blue shirt) vs. Assam J. (5.5)
If you watch closely, you can see why Rameez thinks there are two Assam's on the court
Leslie B. (2.5) vs. Fong Y. (4.5)
Leslie's lesson: You better not get comfortable
Alejandro C. (3.5) (white shirt) vs. Paul D. (3.5)
Alejo had the advantage. Why? Paul just got done playing a tiger.
Alejandro C. (3.5) vs. Rameez A. (4.0)
This battle is for 3rd place and they eventually have to give everything to get the last point.
True story: Goose survived the crash, gave up flying, and went on to play pro-squash!

Wow! - I mean 16 players - WOW! We had a great turnout with a full tournament. AND of the 16 players, Paul M. (5.5) was the tourney's heavy... and just because he won, didn't mean it was easy or without pressure! Of Paul's 12 games, had to give weight to all his opponents and many of the matches went to the last point. Paul came out of the gate with a tough first match against the seasoned Chris M. (3.5) (some would say 4.0 or better). The match spread meant that Paul had to get 17 points before Chris made 4. It was close with Chris taking the first game 4-9, then Paul with 17-2, and finally Paul 17-3. And that was just warm up for Pauls' next big match against Justin D. (5.0), a highly skilled player, but Justin was just not able to keep up with Paul. Paul continued through the winner's bracket against other solid players like Paul D. (3.5) and Carl N. (3.0). Here's the kicker: Paul had to play Carl twice! Once in the winners bracket and then after beating Carl down in to the losers bracket, Carl fought back through the losers' bracket to play Paul in the finals!. All in all, it was exciting and a lot of great squash was played. Congratulations to Paul M. (5.5) for winning his first Squash SMASH Tourney and taking home 1st Place's prize of $160!
1. Paul M. (5.5) - $160
2. Carl N. (3.0) - $100
3. Chris M. (3.5) - $40
4. Sam F. (3.5) - $20
The final brackets
It wasn't all about Paul M. though... There were lots of great players with some spectacular matches. Here's one: Paul D. (3.5) up against the junior Joaquin F. (2.5) in the first round and Joaquin scared Paul with a closer match that he wanted by winning the first game. Paul D. came back but the final game went down to the last point. Sam F. (3.5), in from Woodstock and has played in a couple of the EvenSquash SMASH tourneys and finishing 3rd once went up against Luis P. (3.0) who has played in a lot of these tourneys (actually ranked #27 on the SMASH Winners' Circle). Luis P. pushed Sam down into the loser's bracket in the first round. Sam would play 11 more games to finally bow out to Chris M. (3.5) and take home 4th place.
The nice thing about the EvenSquash SMASH format is that anyone can play anyone and you just don't know who you'll match up with. In some cases, someone new, in some matches, you play someone you regularly play. And face-offs with familiar faces is exactly what happened to Jeff D. (3.0) vs. Alejo C. (3.5), Jim C. (3.5) vs. Jeff D. (3.0), Luis P. (3.0) vs. Chris M. (3.5), Cat G. (2.5) vs. Alejo C. (3.5), and Wayne J. (4.5) vs Chris M. (3.0). Does playing a familiar face make the match easier or harder? No telling, but one thing for sure - at the last point someone will advance closer to first place. Other players like Courtney W. (3.0), Cat G. (2.5), and Roland D. (3.0) got a good mix of new and old faces.
Speaking of new faces... this was a first time showing for Allan D. (3.0), Carl N. (3.0), Paul D. (3.0), Paul M. (5.5), Justin D. (5.0). Thanks for for coming out everyone and hope you'll be back!
All in all it was a blast! Special thanks to Andre 'Legend' Maur (∞.5) for allowing us access to the tourney beer and for reserving all the courts for us!
Below are some great pics n vids and more free commentary... free as in not worth one cent.
Check the side bar for the latest Squash SMASH Tourney's Winner's Circle and other info about the EvenSquash handicap system and tournaments.
Stay tuned - We'll probably run another squash SMASH tourney on Saturday, June 17th....
Wait... so squash is not just like racquet ball?
- Bob -
The Finals: Paul M. (5.5) vs Carl N. (3.0)
Carl, visibly exhausted, still made sure that Paul kept his focus
Alejo C. (3.5) vs Chris M. (3.5)
For those of us who play out of Sandy Springs, we've seen this match up a lot
Roland D. (3.0) vs Sam F. (3.5)
Is this MIB playing squash?
Allan D. (3.0) vs. Carl N. (3.0)
Some great squash... and almost a behind the back shot!
Justin D. (5.0) vs. Paul M. (5.5)
The two tourney heavies going at it with some really quick points
Justin D. (5.0) vs Wayne J. (4.5)
Justin just coming out of playing Paul M., took it out on Wayne J. who might have been thinking about beer...
Joaquin F. (2.5) vs Paul D. (3.5)
Junior vs Adult. The adult can't win: Either you beat a junior or you get beat by a junior
Morhpeus: How did I beat you? Neo: You're too fast. Morpheus: Do you think stronger or faster makes a difference in thisplace? You think that's air you're breathing now?
True story: Neo plays squash

Squash SMASH is back! ...but when? When is it best for a 2hr tourney? Poll up!
If you remember last summer.... and that's probably a big 'if' for most squash players... Every Wednesday night we had a squash SMASH handicapped tournament for players of all skill levels that was fast and fun with cash prizes. That tourney fizzled with eventual low turn out and am not sure if it was because people just weren't available on Wednesday's or something else. I am going to try to start the SMASH tourney up again... but this time I am going to try to find an optimum time. The three times I've heard from people are: Sat am, Sat pm, and Wed pm.
The poll will run for about a week. Once there are enough results to make a decision, I'll send out the announcement for the following week.... hopefully first week of June - Stay tuned!
Bob W. (3.0), aka Squash Boss, crushed, no, destroyed, the field of seven solid squash players in this Saturday's Squash SMASH Tourney. No one stood a chance. He even grinned as he beat the junior players. #stonecold #heartless #Grinch
How did Bob W. pull off such an amazing accomplishment? Some say it was the coffee, some say it was the early morning tournament, some say it was luck, and some say that you can't play a tournament director fairly. Rubbish, I say; I disagree with all of these. Bob played with pure awesome. It's too bad that the tournament director was playing because there is no video or pictures or evidence of the awesomeness of Bob's squash skills: 4-wall boasts, every serve an ace, every ball in the nick.
Here's the full run down: 2. Bob W. (3.0) - $36 1. Tom R. (2.5) - $84 + $50 Sushi Nami Gift Card 3. Roland D. (3.0) - $20 Roland also won the draw for a Free Appetizer Card at Marlow's Tavern
It wasn't all Bob's tournament (well...). The rest of the players played well and had fun too. Even Tom R. (2.5) won a few games by combining both unconventional squash play with knowing how to use patience and opportunity - especially when playing much stronger players. This was Tom's 2nd 1st place win. Tom R. will play as a 3.0 in future events.
We had newcomer, Erik W. (4.0) play in his first ever squash SMASH and he felt the pressure of the tournament format - no errors and you can't give up a point to re-group. I thought for sure Erik was going to end up in the money but he was pushed down into the loser's bracket by Luis P. (3.0) in the first round and in the losers' bracket he matched up against Mario de M. (4.5). Erik patted Mario on the head and sent Mario home, but then... The unconventional, Tom R. (2.5) shook Erik up and sent Erik home! Crazy! Technically, Erik finished 4th. Well done for a first timer.
We also had seasoned player, Carl K. (3.5), who got some tight games in and I thought for sure he was going to advance, but ended up bowing out early to Luis P. (3.0). Roland D. (3.0) also made a great showing, advancing to 3rd place by playing 11 games, almost all matches going the full length. Mario de M. (4.5), the field's highest ranked player, who by the time he warmed up on the court, it was time to go home. Next time Mario - get there early! Luis P. (3.0) was almost shut out by Erik in the first round but managed to get his squash shoes on and hold on for two more matches.
All in all - It was a great Saturday morning. Lot's of squash! Until then, you can always follow along with live updates and latest info on Twitter @EvenSquash, Facebook @EvenSquash, Instagram @EvenSquash. Like in a public bathroom, good squash players don't touch the walls.... - Bob -
Well well welll.... it's come to this: Due to lack of enthusiastic, fun, and, most importantly, cool people (aka Squash Players), we're going to PAUSE the weekly squash SMASH Tourney for a few weeks.
No really - it's been pretty quiet on the courts lately and probably for good reasons like spring breaks, March madness, St. Patrick's Day, tax season, pollen, daylight savings, spicy foods, and so on... so we're going to hold off on running the weekly tourneys until mid April or May.
Until then - I hope to put together a couple of Saturday squash SMASH events at Lifetime locations throughout the Atlanta area.
Alright - I know it is spring break season and all.... but last week was the third week in a row where everyone had something better to do than play squash (I just threw up a little after typing that). We're going to try again this week. Hence the re-use of the Lord of the Squash theme....
If we don't get at least 6 players, we'll just postpone the SMASH tourneys for a few weeks or host the tourney at other clubs or host a Saturday event.
Time to get this party started. In theory - everyone should be back online and we should have a good tournament this week. So sign up if you think you want to play!
